From TV to the Silver Screen – The Rise & Rise of Sushant Singh Rajput

Almost a week into the shocking news of the demise of one of the most promising actors of our times, we are still reeling with grief. Nary could a single soul have, in their wildest imagination, thought that something of this magnitude would take place in these trying times. To be noted, we are still facing a lot of problems due to the lockdown and the pandemic.

For the uninitiated, former television star turned Bollywood actor, Sushant Singh Rajput committed suicide by hanging himself in his Bandra residence. He left no suicide note behind. Walking down the memory lane, we will take a look at all the T.V. shows and Sushant Singh Rajput movies. We surely feel that reading this article would bring back some fond memories of our illustrious star.

Illustrious, we say, because, in India barring a few with the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput, not many television actors have been able to make a successful transition from the Idiot box to the big screen.

Apart from being a talented actor and a proficient dancer, Sushant was also a good human being known for supporting various social causes- be it making donations for Nagaland Floods in 2018 or donating a huge sum of money on the request by a fan to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund during the devastating floods in the state of Kerela, the same year.

On the educational front, an engineering drop-out, Sushant had a liking for astronomy and loved to read books during his spare time. During his interviews, he always used to come across as an intelligent individual who could talk about anything under the sun. He was planning to complete his education and get his engineering degree.

Apart from this, he was a person who dreamt a lot, he had myriad dreams. His bucket list of fifty dreams is a testament to that. Before his untimely death, he did fulfil a few from this list of fifty. With him gone away, the Indian film industry lost one of its talented actors, who within a short span of his career, the versatility of characters and superior acting chops, managed to make a mark in this big bad world called Bollywood.

After a successful stint as a background dancer and joining the theatre group “Ekjute”, he finally forayed into television in the year 2008 with a Balaji Telefilms show.

Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil

Sushant Singh Rajput debuted on the Indian Television with a parallel lead in the Star Plus show – Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil. Produced by Balaji Telefilms, he played the character of Preet Juneja, which was bumped off in the early episodes.

But due to his character becoming so popular with the audience, he was brought back in the series finale as the spirit of Preet Juneja.

Pavitra Rishta

June 2009 proved to be a significant turning point in Sushant’s life, in ways more than one. He bagged the lead in the Zee TV prime time show ‘Pavitra Rishta’ where he played the role of Manav Deshmukh, a car mechanic.

The show was a love story between Manav and Archana where actress Ankita Lokhande played the latter part. All and the show loved Their chemistry and the characters received a lot of appreciation and awards.

Producer Eta Kapoor shared an anecdote where she mentioned how the team at Zee was not convinced about Sushant playing the part because he did not look the character. Ekta had to do a lot of convincing and we are glad she had her way.

Pavitra Rishta gave the television industry an able and prolific actor n Sushant Singh Rajput.

Dance Shows

Apart from working in popular daily soaps and winning hearts with his acting chops, he was also known to be a brilliant dancer. He took part in dance reality shows- Zara Nachke Dikha 2 and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4. Sushant was placed the first runner-up in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 along with his choreo-partner Shampa Sonthalia.

Sushant bid adieu to his character of Manav from Pavitra Rishta in November 2011 to pursue a film-making course overseas. He made a special appearance as Manav in the series finale of the series on 25th October, 2014.

Kai Po Che! (2013)

After several rounds of auditions, Sushant Singh Rajput was selected to portray the character of Ishaan with Rajkumar Rao and Amit Sadh playing the characters of Govind and Omkar respectively. The movie was based on the Chetan Bhagat novel – The 3 Mistakes of My Life.

For his role of Ishan, an ex-district level cricketer, Sushant underwent cricket training for four months to look the part. Such was his dedication to the characters he played.

Kai Po Che! Turned out to be a commercial as well as critical success with the industry taking notice of Sushant’s acting prowess.

Shuddh Desi Romance (2013)

His next film, Shuddh Desi Romance, under the banner of Yash Raj Films and direction of Maneesh Sharma was a rom-com where he was paired opposite Parineeti Chopra and debutant Vaani Kapoor.

He played the character of a tourist guide named Raghu Ram who was perennially perplexed about the relationships he is in. Set in the city of Jaipur, the movie touched upon the concept of live-in relationships.

Shuddh Desi Romance was a box-office success with critics and audience praising Sushant’s acting skills.

P.K. (2014)

Not a full-fledged role but somewhat something that we could best describe as an extended cameo. Rajput played the love interest of Anushka Sharma’s character Jaggu. His character was that of a Pakistani muslim- Sarfaraz Yousuf.

With this role, Sushant got to work with the likes of Anushka Sharma, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani. The movie ‘P.K.’ has been classified as one of Bollywood’s highest grosser of all time.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi (2015)

His 2015 outing was the mystery, action and thriller packed ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshi’- helmed by renowned director, Dibakar Banerjee. The pivotal character- Byomkesh Bakshi- was based on the fictional character by the same name created by Bengali language writer, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.

In preparation of his role for the detective drama, Sushant worked greatly on his look- body language, accent and hairstyles from the 1940s.

The film had positive reviews from the critics and a sequel was in the pipeline with Sushant Singh Rajput reprising his role as Byomkesh.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016)

There comes a ‘once in a lifetime role’ in every actor’s life. For Sushant, that role was essaying the Indian Cricket Captain- Mahendra Singh Dhoni- on the Silver Screen. This sports biographical film was directed by Neeraj Pandey.

To prepare his own self for this magnanimous character, Sushant Singh Rajput gave it all in. He trained extensively in Cricket for months to get the body language of the skipper accurately. By his own admission, Sushant watched heaps of videos of M.S. Dhoni to emulate his mannerisms, body language and game on the screen. 

He also mastered the famous ‘Helicopter Shot’ of Dhoni.

The movie was well-received by the audience as well as the critics alike and proved to be one of the biggest grosser of 2016. 

Sushant Singh Rajput received his first Filmfare nomination for this movie.

Raabta (2017)

Next on, Sushant Singh Rajput starred in the reincarnation drama titled ‘Raabta’ along with Kriti Sanon, Jim Sarbh, Varun Sharma. The movie was the directorial debut of producer Dinesh Vijan.

Touted to be one of the most awaited movies of the year 2017, Raabta failed to live up to the expectations and was a box office failure.

However, the chemistry between the lead pair and the music of the film was well-received.

Kedarnath (2018)

With the backdrop of the catastrophic 2013 Uttarakhand floods, the movie showcased an inter-faith love story between the characters of Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan- Mansoor and Mukku. 

The film recieved mixed reviews from the critics and the audience alike, however people were impressed by Sara Ali Khan’s acting as well as the chemistry between the lead couple.

Kedarnath was Sara Ali Khan’s debut feature film, it also marked Sushant’s second collaboration with director Abhishek Kapoor.

Sonchiriya (2019)

For Sushant, 2019 began with the release of the dacoit drama ‘Sonchiriya’ directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The film was set in the 1970’s Chambal Valley, infamous for Baaghis, dacoits, thefts and robberies.

The film starred exceptionally talented actors of the Indian cinema- Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee, Ashutosh Rana, Bhumi Pendekar and Ranvir Shourey.

The movie failed at the box office but it received positive reviews from the critics and the ‘Best Film- Critics’ award at the Filmfare 2020.

Chhichhore (2019)

His second movie outing of 2019 was the comedy-drama film directed by director Nitesh Tiwari- Chhichhore. The movie touched upon the sensitive issue of career-driven suicides in our country.

Chhichhore featured an ensemble cast of actors led prominently by Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor and Varun Sharma among others. It also received rave reviews for aptly portraying the hostel life in the colleges of India.

Apart from acclaim from the critics, the movie turned out to be a “BLOCKBUSTER” at the box office. Unfortunately, Chhichhore happens to be Sushant Singh Rajput’s last theatrical release before his demise on the 14th June, 2020.

Drive (2019)

They went back and forth with the release date of this film, Dharma Productions released indirectly on the popular OTT platform, Netflix on 01st November, 2019.

Drive was directed by Tarun Mansukhani and Sushant had Jacqueline Fernandez, Vikramjeet Virk, Sapna Pabbi and Boman Irani in this car theft, heist and robbery drama.

The film received bad to negative reviews blaming the weak storyline and bad VFX for the debacle.


Dil Bechara (2020)

Sushant Singh Rajput’s last movie release ever!! The official adaptation of John Green’s novel and Hollywood movie by the same name (The Fault in Our Stars), Dil Bechara was slated to release in May 2020 but was pushed forward due to the CoVid 19 pandemic.

Debut launch for director Mukesh Chhabra as well as actress Sanjana Sanghi, Dil Bechara will see Sushant Singh Rajput portray the Indianized version of Augustus Waters- Manny.

The movie has Saif Ali Khan in a supporting role.

Speculations are rife that Dil Bechara is scheduled to get a digital premiere on the OTT platform- Disney + Hotstar, however Sushant’s fans have requested to release the movie in theatres whenever they re-open as a mark of respect to his talent.
